The Pride of Arnhemland, Dreamtime Timbouctou
Acrylic and mixed media on pressed carton (2015) 101 x 71cm
The panel is inspired by Aboriginal paintings from Arnhemland and some features of the mosque in Timbouctou that was being destroyed by Islamic extremists while the work was in progress. It is an attempt to bring the bas-relief structure to a tolerable extreme and blend it with geometrical and colour balances. I was deeply moved by the going-ons in Mali and decided to elaborate on the connections between two outstanding cultures being under threat.
