War on Gangs

Acrylic on unstretched canvas (2018) 150 x 112cm

When posted in US for my job I was confronted with a whole new perspective on social hatred, nonchalance in buying and carrying weapons and drug related crimes. The existing gangs are so well organized and tolerated that they could storm the Capitol and kill innocent public servants with very little judicial consequences. In this work I want to put together the name of the campaign staged by President Reagan (war on drugs), the feeling of insecurity and disquiet of tattooed hoodlums flashing weapons and the squid-like figure of dark blots encompassing the typical US skyline. The effect I was looking for is is a Hydra, a spread disease, a harsh dissonance. The figures in the pink box are referring to WWI gas protection devices, to a helicopter in Vietnam war and to motorized rickshaws. A way to add more symbols to refer to the chaos and the violence of big cities.
